Weekly Update - October 12, 2018

Happy Friday, everyone!  I hear the sun is possibly coming out this afternoon... get out and soak up the Vitamin D!

Family - Teacher Conferences:
Next week, we hold our fall "family-teacher conferences".  It's a great time to get families into the building and continue to build a partnership with them around educating their child/children.

Last year, we changed the name from "parent - teacher" to "family - teacher" to be more inclusive of our students, families, and their home situation.

As we move into conferences on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, remember these tips:

  • Get up and meet the family, at the door.  This body language starts the tone of the meeting from the time they arrive.   If you shake hands, be aware of any cultural norms that may impact this.
  • Have some strengths ready to discuss.  Each of our students' have strengths - be ready to share these throughout the conference.
  • Be honest about where the student is at, academically and socially.  However, be ready to support this with the data (including your observations).
  • The conference should feel like a planning session, in which it really is.  You, as a team, are coming together to acknowledge the facts and then create a doable action plan to ensure the learner will grow.
  • Value the family's input - what can they add to the table to deepen the conversation and action?  What is their vision for education and their child's future?

Thank you for all you do around family engagement.  Our staff does a great job of building - and deepening - our relationships on a daily basis!

Transition Day - October 22:
October 22nd is our first "transition day" at McKinley.  For our new staff, we engage in transition days after long breaks from school.  The goal is to reunite, re-engage, regulate, and re-establish community on these days.  We have found that students (and staff!) need this day to get acclimated back into school life.

We had a wonderful team design our first transition day.   More information will come out early next week on the details of the day.   We did move our McKinleyStrong Assembly that day to 8:40 (*the building calendar has been updated).

The POWER of THINK TIME:
It's been great getting around to classrooms to see the real work - learning - in action!  As we are designing and instructing lessons, please remember the power of "think time".  Students need time to process, question, and reflect on learning.   As a former classroom teacher, I remember teaching a lesson, getting to the end, and thinking - "did I even take a breath?"  Being intentional about building in think time would have helped me - and can help you and your students!  Don't forget... students need this time to process, but also need to productively struggle with their thinking and questioning.

September Office Referral Data:
Yesterday, our PBIS team met to analyze our September office referral data (see link below).  We looked at trends, as well as possible causes and solutions for the behaviors.

On Monday, October 22, we have a Staff Power Hour where we will focus on this data.  Your team will spend some time looking at your grade level data and creating an action plan to see what supports/changes we can make to decrease the negative and increase the positive behaviors.  More information will come out on this.

When you have some time, check out the data below.  *Please note - these graphs include both major and minor behaviors.

Education MN Break - Take Some Time for YOU!
Next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday is our Education MN Break.   During this break, take some time to focus on YOU!  Do something that only YOU enjoy.  Do something that makes YOU happy and relaxed!  Our work is highly stressful and can wear on a person.  Take this break to enjoy YOU and reground yourself in your WHY and your PERSPECTIVE.  Below are some ideas, if you need them:

Mindfulness Tip from Annette:
As promised, here is #1 of 6 ideas for creating a mindful classroom:
If you already have some familiarity with mindfulness, you may know that establishing a regular practice is key to implementing mindfulness in your life, inside and outside your work environment. Here are some ways to bring mindfulness into your classroom and your teaching life.

1) Establish a regular practice. To create a mindful classroom, it is important to be anchored in your own mindfulness practice. Find a few moments each day to sit quietly and focus on your breath. First thing in the morning can be wonderful, but the best time is the time that works for you.

Mindful Breathing: If you’re brand new to mindful breathing, try this. Find a spot where you won’t be disturbed. Sit with feet flat on the floor, and with a relaxed upright back and head. Place your hands in your lap on on your thighs. Close your eyes or lower your gaze to a spot on the floor in front of you. Breathe regularly through your nose, paying attention to each in breath and out breath. Thoughts may arise; plans, worries, ideas, ruminations or stories. When they do, just gently let them go and return to focusing on each breath.

Challenge: Comment one mindful activity you tried this week.  A drawing of the comments will take place with winner receiving a prize. - Annette Warner, LICSW

Weekly Update- April 12, 2017

35 Days left...
35 days left to make a difference in our students' lives.
35 more reading blocks... 35 more math blocks.... 35 more breakfasts... 35 more recesses...
That equates to 227.5 hours left.
That isn't much time.
How will you make it meaningful?

School Volunteer Week:
Next week is "School Volunteer Week".  If you have a regular volunteer in your classroom, consider honoring them for them for their commitment to our students and families.

Classroom Teachers - Morning Meeting Training:
On Tuesday, April 18,  Jen Koziolek and Jess Zupansic will lead us through some learning work around the concept of morning meeting.  This request came forward from our work with poverty and trauma- and how impactful a safe, predictable, environment is for our students.  Please be on time at 2:40pm to begin (we should be done by 3:15pm) .

Tornado Drill- Thursday:
Next week is also Severe Weather Awareness Week.  On Thursday, April 20, we will join the statewide tornado practice drill at 1:45pm.  Please know your safe site and talk through the expectations with your students.

Moving/Construction:
I am meeting with Nikki (from our relocation company) this morning.  I should have more information on moving and be able to answer some of your questions.

"Hugging a Porcupine"
I recently read a great article on "hugging a porcupine".  Please take a few minutes to read this - the message is worth the time!  http://www.viewfromtheedge.net/?p=13795

PBIS Discipline Data - March:
Below is the discipline data for the month of March.  It's interesting to look at the overall number of referrals, but then start to look at location, reason(s), motivator(s), etc.

Weekly Update- February 17, 2017

Happy Friday - and Happy 100th Day of School!

It's been great to see kids showing their "boomerang" this week during Random Acts of Kindness Week.  This may be a message we continue to say - whatever you throw out, always returns to you.

Staff Recognition at Torey's:
Last night was our staff recognition at Torey's.  Thank you to all who attended- we had a great turnout.  I spoke last night, but I wanted to say it again to everyone.  Thank you for all you do.  We get so busy with the craziness of our days that we forget to celebrate the small victories we have at McKinley.    This place is really a gem.  Thank you to everyone for all your hard work.  You do great things for our students.

Random Things From Twitter:
Over the week, I have found some random things on Twitter that made me think of you and the work we are doing:
This is a composite of a brain- you can see one is sitting quietly and one is after a 20 minute walk.  The red and yellow areas in the brain are tissue growth- the brain is ready to absorb new information.
As we know from our work around outdoor learning, the outdoors (air and environment) are so important to learning.

This statement stood out to me - it's so true.  The future of our world is sitting here at McKinley.  How are we going to shape the future?

As we know, students need a positive, authentic relationships to learn.   This was a great reminder to me to continue to focus on the positives and find one positive thing about each child, each day.

Supervision in Hallways & Bathrooms:
Please make sure we are supervising students in the hallways and bathroom.  Lately, I have seen a lot of students on their "own" in the hallway.  This includes a teacher walking their class - they continue walking, never turning around to monitor students.  The students at the end of the line get farther and farther behind and eventually are on their own.  Please watch this.  Not only is it loud in the hallway, but students get "amped up" as they get louder.  Then, we expect them to come into a classroom and work.  Their brains are not wired this way.   Please be aware of this, especially as we transition into an open school.

Valet Parking for the Week:
The Valet Parking for the Week goes to 1st Grade Teacher, Jess Zupansic!  Jess is such a caring, dedicated, collaborative, and flexible educator who will do anything for her students.  One of the things that impresses me the most about Jess is the way she balances compassion and accountability.  Jess knows how to make her students feel loved and wanted - but also hold them accountable to high standards.  Jess is awesome- keep up the great work, Jess!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the "heat wave"!

Weekly Update- January 27, 2017

Happy Last Day of Conferences!
It's been a great experience for conferences this week.  I love seeing parents in the building and collaborating with you on the education of their child/children.   Thank you for all the time and energy you put into conferences!

A couple "random" updates:
  • Spanish Club starts next week.  Kate Seifert has agreed to lead a Spanish Club for students after school.  Kate has experience from her work in Northfield in a Spanish immersion school. I can't wait to see this in action!
  • ISD 761 Foundation Grants are due today!  When you are finished, send them to Sarah Hoffman.
  • Lorri and I are working on setting up tours of an open school (Wilson and Willow Creek) in the next month.  I'd like for classroom teachers to get into both Wilson and Willow to see what an open school feels and sounds like.  More information will come on this!
  • After School Block II ends on Thursday, February 9th.
Behavior Iceberg:
Just a reminder from a few weeks ago... the behavior iceberg.  So much of the behaviors (actions and words) we see are at the top of the iceberg... we don't really get to see what "below the surface".  Every action has a reason....  This is a great reminder for us all!

Paraprofessional and Educational Assistant Appreciation Week:
Thank you (again!) to our wonderful Paraprofessional and Educational Assistant group here at McKinley.  You are a dynamite team of educators that support learning each and every day. We appreciate you so much!  Hope you enjoyed your week!

Snapshot of Learning:
The pictures this week are almost all NON-learning!

International Fun Day at Work 2017 (which is technically today) was a great success!  It was great to go back to the 80's with our clothes and games!

Snow Day Challenges!  Thanks to all who got silly and had fun!

Valet Parking for the Week:
The Valet Parking for the Week goes to 2nd Grade Teacher Sami Nelson!  Sami is extremely compassionate, flexible, and is a learner herself.  One of the things that impresses me most about Sami is her focus on all kids - in her classroom, but also in the building.  Sami is always looking for ways to make sure every student in our building gets what they need - academically, socially, and emotionally.  Thank you for all you do, Sami!

Have a great weekend, everyone!
