Weekly Update- Friday, September 16, 2016

Happy Friday!
We've finished another great week of learning at McKinley.  It's been great to see how your hard work of teaching procedures and expectations is starting to fall into place.  It's magical!

Entering Absences in AESOP
If you are planning on being absent, enter this into AESOP as soon as you know of your absence.  It gets very hard to fill positions, as you know.  It's even harder when you wait until a few days before you are gone to enter this into AESOP.

Use of Door 8 in the Rain
There have been some questions about using door 8 in the rain.  If it is down pouring rain, you can make the call to use the 3rd grade doors.  This is your call.  The office will make the determination of which door to use when we get into the cold winter season.

GRIT:
Here's a great video reminder of "grit":  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q48fTWSGauA  Grit is our focus this month for PBIS - keep this word alive in your classrooms.  Teach and honor students who are showing grit throughout the month.

A Note From Libby:
I am so excited to be working alongside of you again this year towards our goal of getting 100% of our students to mastery on the critical EU’s in reading.  Since I went through the information pretty quickly at our back to school meeting, I wanted to recap it for you.
Student Centered Coaching
After doing a fair bit of research on different coaching models, I have found that the student centered coaching model is in alignment with our multi-tiered system of support structure and all of the work we are doing in our PLC’s.  If you are interested, you will be able to sign up for a coaching cycle where I would come to your classroom three times a week for a unit (or a part of a unit that you are focused on a specific EU), and we would co-plan and co-teach the unit.  As I mentioned, this was effective in a fourth grade classroom last year where we saw tremendous growth around a particular EU.  One example of a benefit to having two teachers in the room: we could give a formative assessment at any point, one of us could quickly score and group them while the other one of us continued instruction and then we could instantly respond to our students’ progress towards the EU and break into groups.  In K-2, I will have some guided leveling kits that I can come in and work with you on how to complete assessments and then what to do with the information in your guided group to support kids in advancing levels.  I’d also love to do some work with engagement at any level.  I’ll be talking more about this soon, but I wanted you to start thinking about if this is something you are interested in doing.
Other Coaching Options
Please remember that I am here to support you in supporting our students!  Some things that I supported last year and would love to support again: diagnosing student needs, curriculum support (co-teaching, co-planning, modeling anchor lessons, small groups or specific strategies), PRESS, training support staff, gathering data, analyzing data, connecting teachers and anything else literacy.
Literacy Focus
We will continue to focus on clarity with our purpose, K-2 WTW and purposeful independent reading in our support and professional development with literacy this year.
My “McKinley days” are still going to be Wednesday, Thursday and every other Friday morning.  However, the first few weeks will be unique with me supporting the DIBELS assessing team of retired teachers.  Please email me with any questions as that will be the best way to track me downJ.  I’m excited for the growth that we will see this year!

Valet Parking for the Week:
The Valet Parking for the Week goes to Mary Louks!  Mary Louks is a stellar Special Education Paraprofessional.  Mary is always focused on what is right for kids.  She has high expectations, but supports students to meet those expectations.  We are very lucky to have Mary at McKinley.  Thank you for all you do, Mary!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Principal's Update- November 6, 2015

Good Morning!
We finished our first week of November!  Lots to share.....

Monday- Staff Development:
I sent an email out earlier this week about our November 9 Staff Development/Teacher Workday.  We will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church from 7:45-11:00 to work with Deb Cale on Collaborative Learning.   Then, the rest of your day is a teacher workday.   Please be at Trinity and ready to go by 7:45.

Reading Vouchers- Classroom Teachers ONLY:
Just a reminder- Amy is providing 2 hours per month for classroom teachers to collaborate (as a team) on reading anchor texts and lesson implementation.   The blue vouchers are available in the office and should be completed each month (if your team meets).  Any questions, see me.

Family Reading Night- Thursday, November 12:
A huge thank you to Danielle Nystrom, Kayla Davis, Lori Huisenga, Laura Forman, and Sonya David for helping plan our Reading Night.  The event is next Thursday (11/12) from 6-7:15pm here at McKinley.  All families and staff are welcome to attend.  We will have three stations, all focused on giving parents ideas and tools to support reading at home.  It should be a fun night!

Absences:
Please make sure all absences are entered into AESOP as soon as you know you are staying home.  I understand things happen which requires you to be away from the building.  I'm noticing more and more people are entering absences in at the last minute.  This creates a problem with securing a sub for your position.  If you know you are going to be gone, please enter immediately.

Classroom Newsletters:
If you send home a weekly or monthly classroom newsletter, please provide me with a copy of it (hard copy or electronic).  I see them in the copy machine quite often and am interested in the learning you are doing!

Mindset:
It's great to see all the work we are doing with Carol Dweck's Mindset work.  Not only are we making "Mindset" visual with kids, but I'm hearing teachers use this language.  It's a powerful thing to help kids use a growth mindset focused on growth and opportunity!

I found some sentence starters online to help build a growth mindset in the language you use.   Take some time to look through these- just using this language alone helps empower kids and their thought processes:  http://schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/8EA47553-FEE3-4753-8BFC-D6688FC2D61F/0/GrowthMindsetFeedbackTool.pdf

Mice!
Yes, we had a mouse this week!  YUCK!  This is the time of year where they are moving inside to look for warmth and food.  Please be aware of this as you leave things out in your classroom.  If you have snacks or any type of food, please make sure it's stored in a Rubbermaid container or a jar.    We are hoping it was a random isolated event- but Ben has put out a few more traps to see.

Please do not share this with kids- the last thing we need is kids upset about this.

Building Newsletter:

Valet Parking of the Week:
The Valet Parking of the Week goes to 4th Grade Teacher, Kate Seifert.  Kate brings a lot to her 4th grade team- compassion, energy, and positivity.  The thing I appreciate the most about Kate is her positive attitude focused on all kids.  She is a learner herself, always looking for ways to improve her instruction to better meet student needs.  We're lucky to have Kate at McKinley!

Enjoy your weekend!

Principal's Update- March 6, 2015

Happy Teacher Workday!

There's a lot of information in this blog update- good thing you have a whole day to read it! :)

Morning Attendance
Please, please, please make sure you are doing an accurate check of attendance each morning.  Lately, we have families who have one child marked tardy and the other not.  We all know that siblings may take longer than each other once inside the building, however, with our attendance policy, we need to be as accurate as possible!    Thank you!

Sign Out of Building
If you leave the building during the day, please sign in and out of the office (and no, Lorri & Steph can't do it for you!).  This is a safety & security concern more than anything.  If we go into a lockdown or evacuate the building, we need to know that you are out of the building.  This is all staff!

Door to Music/Art
Now that the weather is getting warmer, you can use Door 8 (by the gym) when you go to and from music and art.   With the weather still questionable, make a judgment call each day.  If you feel it's warm enough, use Door 8.  If not, continue to use the 3rd grade door.  Eventually, we will move all grade levels to using this door (except for 2nd and 3rd grade).   Thank you to 3rd grade, Paige, Mara, and Amanda for dealing with all the in and out each day!

Para Support
I wanted to do a quick update so we are all on the same page.  There is some frustration out there regarding Para minutes, wanting more support in the classroom, etc.   I completely understand your frustration.  I do ask that you look at this issue in regards to the building, not just your classroom.  With the increasing needs here at McKinley, our SPED team has looked at Para schedules a few times since I started.  If you feel you need more time, you can address this with your Case Manager.  However, please know that we cannot honor all requests.  This team has worked hard to make the best situation we can with limited staffing.

And, thank you to our awesome Paraprofessionals.  Most of you have quite the schedule- and you do it with a smile on your face each and every day.

STEM Video
Dr. M created a great promo video for our website.  When you have an extra 6 minutes, enjoy the video!

Next Week
*Book Fair & Lunch with a Loved One (Grades 1, 4,&5 on March 12, Grades K,2, &3 on March 13)
*MDE will be visiting our building on March 11.  This is for an audit of our district's EL programming (in case you see people in the building)
*The police will be doing a walkthrough on March 11 with Mr. Olson.  Again, in case you see them.  This is mostly so they know the layout of the building when students are here.

Valet Parking for the Week
There is no Valet Parking for the Week.  This was an auction item at the carnival and the family will be using it next week.
