Math Facts "Super Power" Night- Pictures:
We had around 130 people last night for Math Night.  Families came to learn fun ways to teach math facts for any student. A huge thank you to our committee for all their work planning and making this happen- Danielle Nystrom, Kate Seifert, Dani Rypka, Jess Zupansic, Michelle Meiners, and Karen Thurnau.

Math Family Night- 1/28
January 28: Elementary Family Night @ Wilson Elementary There will be an elementary Family Night on Thursday, January 28 (hosted by Wilson Elementary).  Join us for a community conversation about kids and cooperation with Katy Smith, parent educator and 2011 MN Teacher of the Year.  We will talk about reasonable expectations of an elementary aged child and strategies to develop cooperation and responsibility in them.  Whether you are in a good spot with your kids, or you are struggling through homework every night, this evening will have something to offer your family.

Valet Parking for the Week:
The Valet Parking for the Week goes to Karen Thurnau.  Karen has been a great addition to our 3rd grade team, having worked in both second grade and Tier 2 Interventions.  The thing I appreciate the most about Karen is they way she advocates for all our students- academically, socially, and emotionally.  She is truly cared about our students and making them successful.  McKinley is a better place because of you, Karen.  Thank you!

Don't forget to be completing the "Leadership Slips" for Popcorn with the Principal.

Enjoy your weekend!

Principal's Update- Friday, January 15, 2016

What another great week to be a McKinley Monkey!

Paraprofessionals, I hope you have enjoyed your recognition week.  You do so much for our staff, students, and families.  As much as we appreciate you all year, it was nice to take a special week and show you how great you are!

MLK Day- Monday
Just a reminder that Monday is our ISD 761 Staff Development Day.  This day begins with Superintendent Grant at 7:40am in the OHS Auditorium.  After, Willow Sweeney will begin her presentation (like I have told you before, she is great!).  The rest of the morning and day is differentiated based on your need.  Please connect with me today if you still aren't sure what you will be doing.

Please go into Monday with the growth mindset you bring to work everyday.  A lot of work, energy, and input went into this day to make it extremely purposeful.  I think you will find it to be.

Math Facts Month
Next week, classes will be participating in a "math facts scavenger hunt".  Throughout the week, you will see classes in the hallway trying to solve math problems.  Just an FYI!

ISD 761 Foundation Grants
The ISD 761 Foundation Grants are due January 25 - if your team is thinking about completing one, get it turned in soon!

Article- RtI
Superintendent Grant sent this article out to administration about Rti.  I think you will find the article interesting since we are realigning some of work with core instruction and tier 2.

Kindergarten Kamp Data- Winter
For those of you who don't know, we had some incoming Kindergartners join us for "K Kamp" this past summer.  These students were below benchmark and needed some extra "push" before they joined us in September.

We have been tracking the data of those students who joined us.  It's been some exciting data to watch.  From fall to winter, our building average was 18.6 sounds (DIBELS First Sound Fluency).  This is pretty exciting, as these students started with very little sounds!  If you read this far, email Justin to have your name in a drawing!

Valet Parking for the Week:
Our Valet Parking for the Week goes to Joyce Chinander!  Joyce is a wonderful asset to our Special Education Department.  Joyce is a stellar paraprofessional who builds strong relationships with students.  She uses her relationships to set high expectations and help “her kids” be successful.  Joyce also finds great ways to add a slice of sarcasm and humor…which always brightens my day!

It sounds like it's going to be a cold one this weekend- stay warm!

MSU Students at McKinley
Welcome to a few new faces around McKinley who are studying to be a teacher.  I can't think of a better place to learn from the best.  The following teacher candidates will be joining us:

Ms. Maddie Lee (Jess Zupansic)
Ms. Samantha Gertner (Rhynda Dulas)
Mr. Jordan Bardal (Justin Lang)

Ms. Krystal Klemmensen (Michelle Simon)
Ms. Miranda Olson (Karla Wilke)

This spring, we will have some block II placements with Mark Langlois, Kate Seifert, and Paige Gilligan.

January- Math Facts Focus
For the remainder of January, we will have a math facts month.  I will send an email out today (or this weekend) that you can share with your students- sorry for the delay in this.  The month is a time for kids to build their fluency with math facts.  We will have some activities and special events throughout the remainder of the month.  Again, an email will come out today or this weekend.

Upcoming Family Nights
January 21:  "Facts POWER" Family Night
McKinley is hosting a "Facts Power" Family Night on Thursday, January 21 from 6-7:15pm.  The focus of the family night is ways to learn and master math facts at home.  We will have games, strategies, and activities for you to use at home!  It's going to be a great night!

January 28: Elementary Family Night @ Wilson Elementary
There will be an elementary Family Night on Thursday, January 28 (hosted by Wilson Elementary).
